It was almost five o’clock when Nash parked her rental down the street from Laura’s place. As she walked toward the house, she spotted Lindsay’s car. Nash stopped and stared for a moment, waiting for her heart rate to slow. Of course they were here. Your fortieth birthday was a big deal. Laura had probably invited everyone in her contacts list. Okay, be cool, just be cool.
Nash wasn’t sure how she should act when she saw Lindsay and Shay in the light of day. Probably best to act as if nothing had happened, if that was possible.
In all her fantasies about having a threesome, Nash had never anticipated how she’d feel afterward. Maybe it would have been different if the event had happened with two other people who were single, but being the third member of a threesome with an already established couple wasn’t as awesome as she’d thought it would be.
Nash would have liked to stay and hold Lindsay after they made love, but there wasn’t even a remote chance for that. Shay was the one who’d gotten the option to hold Lindsay after they’d ushered Nash to the door and she’d gone home to her silent dark apartment alone. If asked, Nash would have had to honestly admit that threesomes weren’t so terrific. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. During sex, it was great, but afterward, when the cuddling was supposed to happen, not so great. Especially if you’d recently discovered you were crushed out on one half of the couple you’d just slept with.
The door of the single-level brick house was open, and eighties music blared through the central part of the open floor plan from the pool.
There were a few women lounging on sofas in the sunken living room near the sliding glass doors that opened onto the patio. Nash smiled at them as she headed out to put the six-pack she’d brought into a cooler full of ice. She pulled a Corona free for herself and was busy looking for a bottle opener when she heard Web’s voice behind her.
“It’s about time you got here, dude. I’ve been all alone without my wingman.” Web leaned against the outdoor Tiki bar near the coolers of ice and drinks.
“Sorry. I had a late night, and I was helping a friend move.”
“What friend?”
“Anna.” Nash knew a sarcastic retort was immanent.
“Dude, you’re whipped already and you aren’t even dating her.” Nash had filled Web in on the whole can we just be friends conversation.
“Shut up.” Nash continued her search for a bottle opener. She needed a cold brew, stat.
“You look like shit. Here. Give me that.”
Web took Nash’s beer and opened it with her belt buckle, which Nash now noticed was made from a bottle opener. Classy and practical. Nash decided she might need to get one of those.
“Thanks.” Nash accepted the beer and took a long draw. She mirrored Web’s stance. They leaned against the shaded bar side-by-side and surveyed the array of women in front of them. Some were already swimming.
